Gain Valuable Hands-On Experience
For a small province, Prince Edward Island provides ample opportunities for medical learners to get familiarized with our healthcare system and our province. Whether you’re interested in a return-in-service agreement, our two-year Family Medicine Residency Program, or an elective clinical rotation, we’ve got you covered.

Funding
Family Medicine Sponsorship Program
The Family Medicine Sponsorship Program provides funding to selected medical students pursuing family medicine as a profession. Funds are paid directly to the students through stipends to assist with medical education expenses. Selected students are required to participate in a return-in-service (RIS) commitment to work in an area of greatest need upon completion of their training. Candidates and Health PEI, the provincial health authority, will work together to choose an appropriate location of practice.

As of April 2013, the Government of Canada began offering Canada Student Loan forgiveness to eligible family physicians and family medicine residents who work in under-served rural or remote communities. Loan forgiveness can only be applied to outstanding Canada Student Loan balances (federal portion only).

Programs
PEI Family Medicine Residency Program
The PEI Family Medicine Residency Program provides training in family medicine in Prince Edward Island through a two-year residency training program. Prince Edward Island is a training site through Dalhousie University’s Family Medicine Residency Program, and follows the Dalhousie teaching curriculum. Each year, the PEI program welcomes five new medical residents— four Canadian trained medical graduates and one graduate from an internationally recognized medical school. In addition to learning their specialities, our residents also learn to love life on PEI. We are proud that 78% of our residents choose PEI as their home following their residency.
