From Far and Wide
Prince Edward Island invites physicians from across the globe to explore if their medical credentials meet our local licensure requirements. Most recently, we have welcomed qualified and licensable physicians trained in the following countries:
- Australia
- England
- Ireland
- Scotland
- United States

Eligibility
International Medical Graduates
We welcome your application if you are an international medical graduate who has completed your postgraduate residency training from an approved jurisdiction outside of Canada.

International Specialist Physicians
If you are a specialist physician, visit the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada for information about applying for an assessment of your eligibility. You do not have to live in Canada or hold Canadian citizenship to apply.
International Family Medicine Physicians
For information about qualifying exams, visit the Medical Council of Canada. In most cases, one to two years of independent clinical experience in Canada is required.

Obtaining a Medical Licence to Practice on PEI
If you are an internationally trained medical graduate, you must first obtain licensure to practice medicine in Prince Edward Island prior to a formal interview and selection process. Once a licence is granted, and any potential restrictions are known, Health PEI will then determine if you can be considered for employment.
Visit cpspei.ca for information related to applying for a licence.
Please note: Observership and volunteer work in Canada does not count towards independent clinical practice experience.
